When Miguel López de Legazpi arrived on the island of Cebu 1565, he was accompanied by the Augustinian Andrés de Urdaneta, the chief sailor of the expedition, and four other Augustinians.
In 1571, the expedition reached Manila, where the Augustinians built the main house of their order in the Philippines.
By 1578, the Order was joined by the Franciscans, and then by the Jesuits (1581), the Dominicans (1587) and by the Recollects (1606).

On the 17th of August 2008, a spectacle never before seen in the parish happened. Long lines of students and pupils in uniform, government officials and ordinary people on the street patiently waited for St. Rita’s relic. When it arrived, a very solemn procession was then held which concluded with a concelebrated Mass at the parish church.

Due to the rising floodwaters inside the parish church and around its vicinity, all Sunday Masses on 26 June 2011 were moved to nearby chapels. The 5:00 a.m. and 6:30 a.m. Masses were held at the San Jose Chapel, the 8:30 a.m. Mass was at the San Vicente Chapel and the 5:30 p.m. Mass was at the San Matias Chapel.
The flooding was caused by the heavy rains brought on by the tropical storm Falcon. Groundwater also seeped through the flooring of the church, thereby worsening the situation.

On 15 June 2011, twenty (20) years after the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo, the Parish celebrated a Mass of Commemoration and Thanksgiving at 6:00 a.m., which was the time that all twenty-two (22) parishes in the second district of the province agreed upon to hold simultaneous Masses. It may be remembered that the second district of Pampanga was one of the worst hit during the Pinatubo years.
